I'd always go with vanilla farms for sugar cane and cactus, there's plenty of videos on youtube, try searching. It can be found and placed on grass, podzol, dirt, or sand, as long as the block is adjacent to water on at least one side. Sugar cane can also be used with a composter to get bonemeal, however, melon farms are probably more suited for this.
